The Special Education Department is an integral part of
our school. This department includes two classes, which
serve students with Moderate Intellectual Disabilities in
grades 2-5. All of our students are included in
the general education program for one or more of the
following activities: Music, Physical Education, Art,
Computer, 4-H, and other group activities.
Our students are actively engaged in learning
both in the classroom and in the community.
Community-Based learning includes instruction in real-life
community environments across all curriculum domains.
Each year our students "star" in a fully costumed and
choreographed stage production. Our students have
entertained audiences from Brookwood to the
University of Georgia with their talents. "A Day in the Life
of Mother Goose", an original play written by Bea Grice our
Primary MOID Teacher, was highlighted at the Disability
Art Collection at the University of Georgia.
All of our students participate in the local and area Special
Olympic Games and many go on to compete at the state level.

Each year during Disability Awareness Month, our
department sponsors special activities. These have
included a Disability Awareness Fair, Masketeers and
Puppeteers from Gracewood State School and Hospital,
New Kids on the Block Puppeteers from MCG, participation
in a statewide art contest, and classroom activities. Our
school was the first in the county to sponsor a Disability
Awareness Fair where general education students are
given an opportunity to experience, through simulated activities,
the challenges of living with a disability.
