Patrons of our Media Center include members from all parts of the school community—students, parents, faculty, and staff. Each patron is assigned a numbered account in the Media Center’s computer database, and students are given library cards barcoded with their County school system ID numbers. Any parent interested in having a library card may request one at the circulation desk. We have a number of parents who come with their children to check out extra books above the number allowed to individual students at any one time. We encourage parents to share stories with their children at home. For students in primary grades, reading daily with a parent is of invaluable importance.
According to standards, each student should be given the opportunity to check out a book at least once a week. In order to ensure the implementation of this standard, teachers flexibly schedule weekly class checkout times with the media specialist; these are recorded in the Media Center schedule book, and a weekly Media Center schedule is published and distributed to all teachers to reflect changes and updates. Students may also come to the Media Center throughout the school week on an individual basis to check out new materials as they finish reading their books or browsing through their magazines at their own pace.
Students are allowed to check out two items—book(s) and/or magazine(s)—for pleasure-reading at a time. Parents are allowed to check out up to three books and/or periodicals simultaneously. The loan period for students and parents is one week.
