Extracurricular Eligibility

Competing and participating in extracurricular activities is a great way to meet new people, build self-health, challenge yourself, and just plain have fun!!! But, in order to compete in most extracurricular activities a student must pass five out of six classes the previous semester and be on track to graduate with his/her class. Don't miss out on the opportunity to participate in something you love because of poor grades. In addition to all the positives extracurricular activities provide, most colleges use your participation in these activities as a way of seeing if you are a well-rounded person. So participate, compete, and have fun!

GHSGT and EOCT

In the fall of your junior year, you will begin a series of tests known as the Georgia High School Graduation Test. The test has five sections: writing, language arts, math, science, and social studies. The writing portion in given in the fall while the four remaining sections are given in the spring. The GHSGT is very important. A student must pass all five parts in order to receive their diploma. Treat your class work and homework seriously because it will better prepare you for the GHSGT.

If you do not pass any portion of the GHSGT, you will be allowed to retake the portion before graduation. Good luck, I'm sure you'll do well on this test. For more information including sample questions,
please follow this link!

Harlem High School students must also take End of Course Tests. These tests are given at the end of each of the following courses: Algebra I, Geometry, United States History, Economics, Biology, Physical Science, Ninth Grade Literature and Composition, and American Literature and Composition. The ECOTs are not a sole determining factor in the passing or failure of a course; however the ECOTs will be averaged in the final grade of every student taking the courses previously mentioned. For more information including sample questions please follow this link!

Graduation Requirements

There are four diploma seeking programs of study: College Preparatory(CP), College Preparatory with Distinction(CP+), Technology/Career(TC), and Technology/Career with Distinction(TC+).
CP+ 24 Credits to Graduate and an 80 Core GPA
CP 22 Credits to Graduate
TC+ 24 Credits to Graduate and an 80 Core GPA
TC 22 credits to Graduate

Each of the four programs of study provide students with different challenges and educational experiences. Each program also provides different post-secondary educational options. If you have any questions or want further explanation on the programs of study, please consult your counselor. The Core GPA mentioned above is based on the following classes.

For College Prep students there are 16 core classes:
4 Units of English
4 Units of Math
3 Units of Science
3 Units of Social Studies
2 Units of One Foreign Language

For Tech/Career Students there are 13 Core Classes:
4 Units of English
3 Units of Math
3 Units of Science
3 Units of Social Studies

Keep in mind the subjects listed above, have individual requirements within the Units. For example, a college prep student is required to pass 4 Units of Math. However, within those 4 Units, the student must pass One Unit of Algebra I, One Unit of Geometry, and One Unit of Algebra II. Each subject is like this to an extent. There are also other specific requirements within the 22 or 24 credits needed to graduate. Please reference the course catalog provided to you or contact the Guidance and Counseling office for more information.

Honor Graduate Quality Point Information

Beginning with the class of 2005, grades 9-12 will use the Quality Point numerical system to determine Honor Graduates:
PLEASE FOLLOW THIS LINK TO READ MORE ABOUT THE PROCEDURE!

You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the link above. If you DO NOT have Adobe Acrobat Reader, download it HERE

This Quality Point numerical system basically awards a student a quality point rating based on their numerical score for every course he or she takes in school. All AP and Postsecondary courses will receive quality points based on a 6.0 scale. All other courses will receive quality points based on a 5.0 scale. In other words, an 100 average in an AP or Postsecondary Course will receive a 6.0, a 95 = 5.5, an 85 = 4.5, etc. All other courses will receive a 5.0 for an 100 average, a 95 = 4.5, an 85 = 3.5, etc. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact your child's school counselor.

Hope Scholarship

The Hope Scholarship requirements differ depending on a student's program of study.

For College Prep students, the HOPE Scholarship recognizes 16 units. The HOPE Scholarship will average these 16 Units in order to calculate your HOPE average, which needs to meet or exceed 80. The 16 classes are as follows:

4 Units of English
4 Units of Math
3 Units of Science
3 Units of Social Studies
2 Units of Foreign Language

If you are a college prep student and will graduate in 2007 with an extra credit in any of the five subjects above, the extra unit will also be averaged into your HOPE grade point average. For example, if you took Algebra I in 8th grade and decide to take AP Calculus as a senior then all five math units will count towards the HOPE Scholarship. Also if you happen to fail a class and repeat the class in summer school, night school, or later in your high school career, your passing and failing grade will be averaged together. For example, if you took Spanish IA and failed it with a 68, but attended summer school and passed the course with a 90, your HOPE grade for Spanish IA will be (90+68)/2 which equals 79. Your HOPE grade is now a 79 for Spanish IA. Also, the Hope will no longer base your grades on an 0-100 numerical scale. Your grades will now be scrutinized using the 4.0 scale. On this scale you must have a 3.0 GPA. This new grading system is much more difficult. Please take your studies seriously and attempt to make every high B an A, every high C a B, and every D a C. You really need to strive to make all A's and B's in your core classes.

For Tech Career students, the HOPE Scholarship and HOPE Grant recognizes 13 units. The HOPE Scholarship and HOPE Grant will average these 13 Units in order to calculate your HOPE average, which needs to meet or exceed 85. The 13 classes are as follows:

4 Units of English
3 Units of Math
3 Units of Science
3 Units of Social Studies

If you are a tech prep student and will graduate in 2007 with an extra credit in any of the four subjects above, the extra unit will also be averaged into your HOPE grade point average. For example, if you take a fourth year of math as a senior then all four math units will count towards the HOPE Scholarship. Also if you happen to fail a class and repeat the class in summer school, night school, or later in your high school career, your passing and failing grade will be averaged together. For example, if you took Economics and failed it with a 68, but attended summer school and passed the course with a 90, your HOPE grade for Economics will be (90+68)/2 which equals 79. Your HOPE grade is now a 79 for Economics. Also, the Hope will no longer base your grades on an 0-100 numerical scale. Your grades will now be scrutinized using the 4.0 scale. On this scale you must have a 3.2 GPA. This new grading system is much more difficult. Please take your studies seriously and attempt to make every high B an A, every high C a B, and every D a C. You really need to strive to make all A's and B's in your core classes.
