The faculty and staff at Harlem Middle School welcome you! Our school is a safe place where teachers are passionate about helping students succeed. HMS teachers create classrooms that foster learning and utilize a multitude of instructional strategies to promote student engagement. Our school is developing an effective communication system in order to encourage parent involvement and to build solid partnerships with the school community. Harlem Middle School has a culture of learning emphasizing that all students can meet academic expectations; however, there is a solid plan in place for when student do not succeed. The school is in the process of creating strong transition programs that assist, facilitate, and promote the smooth transition of students to the next level of education.
We are anticipating another exciting and challenging school year. The faculty and staff are here to help students reach their goals and encourage all students to be active learners and participants in the classroom. We want the years that students spend at Harlem Middle School to be memorable and enriching. The opportunity to work with students and parents is extremely important to all of us and we look forward to building solid partnerships with our students and their families during the new school year.

This is Mr. Miller's fifth year at HMS. Before coming to Harlem Middle, he was a science teacher in Newton County for seventeen years.
He has one daughter who has recently graduated from MIT. |
Mr. Brian Reeder |
This is Mr. Reeder's first year at HMS. After receiving a Bachelors degree in Business Administratin from Augusta State University in 1997, Mr. Reeder spent the next sixteen years working at management positions for several area businesses. As his two children (Laura-now 17 and Scott-now 14) began to grow, he became active in coaching, which eventually led him to choose education as a profession in 2004. The fact that his wife has been a lifelong educator since 1987, and today is Principal of a Coulumbia County elementary school also probably played an important role!
While teaching 7th Grade Math and Language Arts at Evans Middle School, Mr. Reeder earned his teaching certificate during the 2004-2005 school year, his Masters degree in Educational Leadership during the 2005-2006 school year, and his Specialist degree in Educational Leadership during the2006-2007 school year. The summer after the 2006-2007 school year, Mr. Reeder was selected to be the 5th Assistant Principal at Evans High School, a position created by growth in student population at that school. When offered the position of Interim Assistant Principal here at Harlem, Mr. Reeder welcomed the opportunity to return to his middle school roots, to the school he says is the best kept secret in the county. He feels honored to have had the oportunity to work with some of the best staff and students this county has to offer. |
