Humm...what do I need from the library today? Where can I find what I am looking for?
Do I want a made up story with lots of pictures?
EverybodyFiction
This is our "Everybody Section."
Our Everybody Fiction section is filled with Picture Books, books with made up stories and pictures. We call it the Everybody section because there are books here for everyone, some easy and some more difficult. This section is in alphabetical order by the author's last name. If you were a famous author, which shelf would your book be on?
I think I want to read a made up story that is longer and a little more difficult...
Fiction
Fiction Anyone?
Our Fiction section has longer, more difficult books that are divided into chapters. These books are also on the shelf in alphabetical order by the author's last name. What shelf do you think you would find the latest edition of Harry Potter...the H shelf or the R shelf?
But I really want to know more about dinosaurs, space, holidays, our government, battles of the Civil War....
NonFiction
Non Fiction
Visit the Non Fiction section if you are looking for books with facts about people, places and things. This section is divided into sections according to the Dewey Decimal System. We have helpful signs at each section so that you can narrow your search. Can you guess what is the most popular section in our library?
Now where should I go to find "Reference Books"...
Reference
Reference
The reference section is where we keep our dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, atlases, thesauruses and other reference books. (Even the telephone book!) These books can be checked out by your teacher for the day or you can take notes from them here in the library.
Are there any books here about famous people that lived long ago or maybe still alive?
Biography
Biographies
A biography is a book written ABOUT a person. Our biography section is found at the end of our NON FICTION section. Each book has B and the first three letters of the famous person's last name on the spine, so if you want to read about Harriet Tubman, you would look for B Tub on the spine of the book. What would be on the spine of Beverly Cleary's biography - B Bev or B Cle?
What about a magazine...could I checkout a magazine from here?
Magazine
Current Magazines
If you are in 3rd - 5th grade, you can check out any of our PAST ISSUES of Sports Illustrated for Kids, Ranger Rick, American Girl and many more. Just put your magazine in the bag below the shelf and bring it to the checkout desk. If you are in 1st and 2nd, be sure to visit our magazine shelf when you are visiting the library to read the current issues.
Well, great, I found what I needed...now what?
CircDesk
Circulation Desk
After you have found what you need, go to the circulation desk and we will check them out to you. If you are in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade, you can check out one book. If you are in 3rd - 5th, you can check out 2 items - 2 books or a book and magazine. When you bring all of your items back, you can check out something else.
That all sounds great, but I really need at least one book in my ZPD to practice my reading comprehension and to meet my goals. Where are those books?
AR
Look for the colored labels!
Our Accelerated Reader books are marked according to reading level. There are handy charts around the library to help you find what you are looking for. Just ask us and we will help you find a book that is just right for you.
How can I find a specific book?
lookup station
Lookup Station
At one of our Lookup Stations, you can look for a book by TITLE, AUTHOR, SUBJECT or KEYWORD. You can also do a VISUAL SEARCH. If you are in 3rd grade - 5th grade, be sure you visit this place and don't forget to ask for help if needed.
Are there computers to use for online research?
Minilab
Our minilab
Our minilab presently has 5 computers for student, teacher and even parent use. You can visit the minilab for individual or small group activities BUT your teacher must have planned with the media specialist before using this lab. Our county has provided many online databases for us to use to find information: Galileo, Nettrekker, World Book and SIRS Discoverer.
I lost my pencil on the way to school...what can I do?
Store
Shop 'til you drop!
Come to our School Store. It is open each morning from 8:00 - 8:20 according to the following schedule: Monday - 5th grade, Tuesday - 4th grade, Wednesday - 3rd grade, Thursday - 2nd grade, Friday - 1st and PreK. You really need to check in with your teacher before you visit the store. We, also, have erasers, poster paper, sharpeners and pens.
Everywhere there are rules...are there any for the media center?
Just like everywhere in the school you should WALK, TALK QUIETLY (Don't interrupt), KEEP BUSY (No playing), CLEAN UP and TAKE CARE of BOOKS!
