Eight middle schools in Columbia County presently serve students in grades 6-8. The middle school concept involves the interdisciplinary team approach, which allows teachers in the core disciplines to work on a designated faculty team with regard to a specific population of students. This model promotes the delivery of instruction in a manner which facilitates an understanding of relationships between the core instructional areas of math, science, social studies, and language arts. Common planning times for core team teachers allow for discussion leading to interdisciplinary considerations as well as understandings relative to the unique learning styles of individual students
The school day consists of a 300-minute core instructional module, complimented by two (2) connections blocks during which time students may receive instruction in a variety of classes such as band, physical education, foreign language, choral music, general music, art, and a host of vocational / technical offerings. Remediation/acceleration instruction is also available during the connections blocks for those students whose level of learning indicates a need for additional assistance. Students who meet the entry criteria may also take Spanish I for high school Carnegie Unit credit. Gifted students may receive advanced content instruction in math in grades 6, 7, and 8, with social studies, science, and language arts advanced instruction available on a rotational basis during the three middle school years.

The middle school experience represents a time of exciting learning opportunities for the students in Columbia County. A strong core component, augmented by well-structured connections offerings make the instructional format in grades 6-8 productive and meaningful. Through the efforts of a caring and qualified professional staff, students leave the middle school well prepared for their high school years
