Kindergarten is for many children their first experience at school. We, at North Columbia, strive to make learning fun and productive for all students. Kindergarten provides the foundation for life-long learning. Students develop socially as well as academically through a variety of classroom activities. Our students have educational opportunities outside of their classrooms. They participate in Art, Music, or PE daily and visit the computer lab and the media center weekly. Learning experiences include fieldtrips to see literature in action at Storyland Theatre. We share in the season of Christmas by visiting Lake Crossing Nursing Home and the Augusta Mall. We use Saxon Phonics and Building Blocks to teach our students to read and write. Through these programs, students are involved in reading phonetically while also building a sight word vocabulary. Both of these programs include parents in the learning process through take-home books and word lists. Kindergarten is known as "a child's garden". Children enter our doors as seeds ready to be planted. After many learning experiences and opportunities for growth, they leave as flowers ready for first grade! Kindergarten is a time for growing and building skills necessary for becoming life-long learners in the garden called LIFE! |
