Columbia County Bus Safety Rules School Year 2006 - 2007 When you get on the bus, go directly to your assigned seat. Stay in your seat when the school bus is moving. Keep the aisles and exits clear. Stay seated until time to get off of the bus. The open door is the signal to get up from your bus seat. When you leave the bus, use the handrail. Always be at the stop on time. Arrive 5-10 minutes before the bus comes. Never run to the bus. Follow the directions of the driver. Be at the stop in inclement weather as well as fair weather. Wait in an orderly, single file line and avoid playing.
Remain properly seated - back against the back of the seat, bottom against the bottom of the seat and keep hands to yourself Do not eat, drink, chew gum, or bring controlled substances on the bus. Do not carry animals, glass objects, nuisance items, hazardous material or weapons' on the bus. You may carry objects that can be held on your lap. No large items such as plants, trees, balloons, flowers and posters may be carried on the bus. Band instruments must be held in the student's lap or placed under the seat. No instrument may be placed in front of the exit door or in a seat needed for students. Buses cannot transport instruments larger than a trombone. Cross the roadway in front of the bus after the bus has stopped. Look in both directions for traffic (left, right, left). After you have made eye contact with the driver then cross with the driver's hand signal. Signal the driver with a waving motion if something has been dropped and wait for the driver to give a signal before picking up the object. Refrain from using loud voices, profanity, vulgarity, and obscene gestures and respect the rights and safety of others. Do not bring pornographic material, radios, tape players, or cassette disc players on the bus based on your school's rules.
Make sure nothing is sticking out of your clothes or your book bags that could get caught in the bus door. If you have to cross the street in front of the bus, walk at least 10 feet (5 giant steps) in front of the bus and only cross the street when the driver signals you to do so. Be sure you can see the driver and the driver can see you. When bus is moving always stay in your seats. Do not extend your head, arm, or objects out of the bus windows. Do not distract the driver with excessive or loud talking. The driver needs to concentrate on the road. The bus driver's job is to get you to and from school safely. Always know where the emergency exits are on the bus. In a real emergency, listen carefully to your driver for instructions. Danger Zone!!!! Always walk in front of the crossing arm of the bus. It is never safe to walk close in front of the bus. Always walk 10 feet (5 giant steps) in front of the bus before crossing.
Danger Zones!!!!! Remember never walk close to the side Of the bus. Stay at least 6 feet away from the sides of the bus (3 giant steps). You may be in the driver's blind spot.
Danger Zone!!!!! Never walk behind a school bus. The driver will not be able to see you. Walking Areas .... When getting off the bus make sure you walk 3 more steps away from the bus. Stay away from the bus wheels and watch out for moving cars. If you have to walk on roads where there are no sidewalks always walk against traffic. Try to stay off the road as much as possible.
Provide a written note, signed by your parents or guardian giving you permission to ride a different bus or get on or off the bus at a different stop location. Keep the bus clean and in good, safe condition. You will be charged for any damage to the bus. It is important to look carefully to the left, right and then to the left again if you have to cross the street. When you are waiting for the school bus, you should wait at the bus stop and stand back from the curb, road, or street. Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it is okay to board before stepping onto the bus.
Look to the rear of the bus before you step off the bottom step.
Remember to be still and quiet at all times at all intersections and railroad crossing. The bus driver needs to be able to look and listen for oncoming cars and trains. Students must be totally. silent at railroad crossings. Make sure you have eye contact with the driver and wait for the driver to signal you before you cross the in front of the bus.
Never go back for anything you have left on the bus.
Never bend down near or under the bus. It is important to look carefully to the left, right and left again if you have to cross the street.
Remember the DANGER AREAS around the school bus where the driver cannot see you. Do not run between parked buses. Don't run across the street or through a parking lot trying to catch up with your friends.
It is important to listen to your bus driver in case there are any special instructions for your bus ride. Sit quietly in your seat. Speak quietly to the other students near you.
Do not jump or down, fight or tease other students or make a lot of noise. These activities can bother the bus driver and the bus driver will not be able to give proper attention to driving.
Remember to be still and quiet at all intersections and railroad crossings. Your bus driver needs to be able to look and listen for on coming cars and trains.
If you drop something near the bus, don't pick it up until you tell the bus driver. The driver may not see you. Don't cross the road if you hear a siren.
Insolence, disobedience, fighting and pushing will not be tolerated on the bus.
A crossing control arm is mounted on the front bumper and will swing out when the door is opened. It is designed to keep students from walking close to the front of the bus. Walk in front of the crossing control arm.
