What is a good composition?

A composition is a work of art that effectively uses:

The elements of design- line, shape, texture, space, and color and

The principles of design- contrast, repetition, movement, rhythm, variety, unity, balance, pattern and emphasis.

My Favorite Quotes from impressive artists:

"Grant that I may aspire to more than I can accomplish." Michelangelo Buonarotti.

"Every child is an artist." Pablo Picasso.

"Acceptance on someone else's terms is worse than rejection." Mary Cassatt.

"I found that I could say things with colors and shapes for which I had no words." Georgia O'Keeffe.

"Love." Robert Indiana.

"I paint things as I think them, not as I see them." Pablo Picasso.

"He dearly loved drawing." Epitaph on the tombstone of Edgar Degas.

"There is enough ugly in the world. I will not apologize for painting beautiful things." Auguste Renoir.

"The modern painter cannot express his age, the airplane, the atom bomb, or the radio in the old forms of the Renaissance or any other past culture." Jackson Pollock.

This is my 7th year at Greenbrier High School teaching four introductory visual arts classes and one advanced art class to very creative and likeable young people. I have taught art for 32 years in elementary, middle, and high school; the last several years were spent in Nashville, Tennessee before coming to Columbia County. I received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in art from East Tennessee State University and have done further study in art education at the University of Florida. In addition to art, I have enjoyed teaching 9th grade Honors English for 15 years and advanced placement art history for 7 years.

The Greenbrier art department continues to grow with three art teachers providing thirteen art classes, including Art I, Art II, ceramics, photography, and an advanced placement art studio class. I particularly enjoy teaching introductory classes where students often experience their first hands-on success in art. My special interests include incorporating art history in all areas of the curriculum and displaying awesome art work in the Greenbrier Spring Art Show in March.

I am honored to serve as the Fine Arts Chairperson again this year and my goal is to continue to broaden communications among the arts faculty. We are very happy that Ms. Karen Boyd from Greenbrier Middle School has joined the visual arts faculty this year as our new music teacher. I especially enjoy working with all things academic: National Honor Society, senior projects and graduation. In the community, I have been a member of the faculty advisory panel of the Morris Museum of Art. I am especially appreciative of the fine physical facility at Greenbrier High School, a supportive administration, and a faculty that works as a team. Picasso said that "every child is an artist"...somehow as we grow older we forget that thought. I chose a wonderful profession that allows me to remind young people about this gift everyday.

The Four As

A truly well-rounded young individual should strive to succeed in the academics, the arts, and the athletics while always maintaining a positive attitude.
