Transition Curriculum Information
The Transition Curriculum focuses on teaching students with disabilities to live and work independently. Freshmen and sophomores take Functional Academics; Basic and Consumer Math, Reading/Language Arts, and Independent Living Skills/Job Explorations. General Curriculum Electives such as Family and Consumer Science, Community, Careers, and Family, Nutrition, Horticulture, Technology and Child Development augment the Transition Curriculum. Ninth and tenth graders travel to various community agencies, businesses, restuarants, shopping sites, recreation facilities, utility companies and prospective worksites to become familiar with the services offered. Students may take interest based electives; P.E., 2D and 3D Art, Music, Drama or Chorus.
Junior and senior students rotate in community-based work training at eight job sites throughout the school year. They are paired with employees at businesses such as Brandonwilde, Target, Doctor's Hospital, Walmart, K-Mart, etc. In the classroom, students get realistic preparation in areas such as social skills, hygiene, grooming and dress, applying and interviewing, getting along with customers, employees and employers, and resume preparation. As juniors, students receive a comprehensive vocational evaluation to determine interests, skills and aptitudes.
Upon graduation students are encouraged to explore further job training at Georgia's Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. There, they can take advantage of a wide range of services designed to help them foster independence, build confidence, and achieve employment. Mrs.Terri Bartles, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, provides students and parents with information about Warm Springs and follow up services offered by Vocational Rehabilitation when they graduate from Warm Springs. (Please see Mrs. Bartles' e-mail address in Transition Links.) Juniors and seniors and their parents will be visiting Warm Springs (Fall 2007.) Date/Time T.B.A.
