Dr. Ellen Hickey
Grovetown Middle School
Sixth Grade Language Arts
Welcome to Dr. Hickey's page
Grovetown Middle Logo I believe in learning through experience, and my program focuses on "hands-on" interdisciplinary activities and real-life simulations. Over the course of the school year, my sixth-grade students develop several individual and class presentations, ranging from "How-to . . ." demonstrations to biography projects, that culminate in a full-length drama unit.

A strong school-home relationship is vital to my students' success, and regular reports are sent home to keep parents informed of student progress. I post classroom information and details of major assignments on "Schoolnotes.com" for parent and student review.

A link to the Prentice-Hall textbook series appears on the upper left-hand section of this page. Parents and students can explore the site together (students should always be monitored when using the Internet); there are links to specific textbook chapters for quick review, homework help sites, study skills advice, and reference material.

I have set up my classes for Study Island practice. Study Island is a Web site to which the school subscribes to give students extra practice in certain core subjects. This service is provided free of charge to our students and may be used both at school and at home. A link to the Web site appears on the upper left-hand section of this page.

Parents are able to access their child's grades via i-Parent. A link to i-Parent appears at the top of this page, and specific registration information may be obtained from the Media Specialist.

Sixth-graders face a year full of excitement and challenge, and it is my joy to watch them grow and learn. In addition to curricular gains, I hope to develop in my students those reasoning and decision-making skills that will create a school-to-life connection and have life-long value for them and society.
