Guidance and Counseling Program Overview

Classroom Guidance
Classroom guidance lessons are conducted in units and are based on annual needs assessment reports. Each class is involved in 4 units per year. Each unit contains 3 separate lessons that are facilitated in 3 consecutive weeks. Also, at the beginning of the year, each class is involved in one introductory lesson. Each class receives 13 lessons per year. Kindergarten and first grade lessons are 30 minutes long, while second through fifth grades are 45 minutes in length. Lessons are designed around three broad areas: Academic Development, Career Development and Personal/Social Development. Students learn through bibliotherapy, technology, art, puppetry, games and interactive discussion.

Individual Counseling
Students are seen individually as needed. Students can be referred by themselves, parents, teachers or administration. Sessions are approximately 30 minutes in length. Parental Permission must be obtained after a child is seen once.

Group Counseling
Students participate in small group activities throughout the year. Sessions are approximately 45 minutes in length. Group topics address issues such as new student transition, divorce, death, behavior, friendship, study skills and responsibility. Parental permission is obtained.

Character Education
A school wide character education program is designed and implemented each academic year. Through a school news show, all students are educated on numerous character words. Students participate in various activities throughout the year such as writing assignments, peer nominating, and contests.

Mentoring Program
A mentoring program is monitored throughout the academic year. Students are matched with mentors from the community. Mentors meet with students on a weekly basis. Students, who are assigned to mentors, participate in activities that promote gratitude for the volunteers (making holiday cards, creating gifts, preparing for end-of-year farewell parties).

Needs Assessments
Every teacher and every 5th parent and student on classroom rosters
(grades 1st– 5th) is given a guidance and counseling needs assessment at the beginning of each academic year. The document assesses the classroom guidance topic needs of the school’s population as well as needs for specific areas of service such an individual and group counseling. Assessments are compiled and analyzed in order to set goals, priorities and emphasis for the guidance and counseling program.

School Based Guidance Plan
After assessing the needs of the school population, a written school based guidance and counseling program plan is designed. This annual document allows for the counselor to develop goals, objectives, activities, time frames and outcomes for a developmental and comprehensive school guidance and counseling program.

Individual Guidance and Counseling Plan
A written individual plan of action is designed to ensure the implementation of the school based guidance plan. This plan is a detailed, month by month calendar of the duties and responsibilities to be implemented.

End of Year Guidance and Counseling Surveys
As with all stated plans and reports, guidance surveys are sent out each school year. Every parent, teacher and student (grades 3rd – 5th) is given the opportunity to evaluate the guidance and counseling services received throughout the year. The school population is encouraged to express benefits received from the guidance and counseling program as well as critique the overall effectiveness of the program. Evaluations are compiled and analyzed.

A guidance and counseling newsletter is distributed monthly. The newsletter informs readers of classroom guidance topics, character education, parenting tips and other guidance and counseling related information.
