Welcome to Healthcare Science Technology |
Welcome parents and students. My name is Kim Pippin and I am one of two Healthcare Science Technology Education teachers at GHS. I teach one Introduction to HSTE class and two Clinical classes. I have 20 years of experience working as a registered nurse in a variety of healthcare settings which gives me a wealth of experiences to share with students as they explore the world of healthcare. This is my sixth year teaching at Greenbrier High School. I am also one of the FCA sponsors and in charge of the Miss Greenbrier High School Pageant. Intro. is a class for anyone, whether you are interested in a career in Health care or will only be a health care consumer. This course will teach you information and skills that will give you a basic understanding of the world of health care. You will also obtain CPR and First Aid certification. Clinical is for 2nd year students who have a definite interest in a career in health care. These students may obtain their certified nursing assistant license and have the opportunity to job shadow many different health care professionals in our community. |
Intoduction to Healthcare Science Technology |
| The second semester of Intro. to Healthcare Science involves learning medical terminology in conjunction with Anatomy and Physiology. We cover most of the systems of the body, learning the structures and functions of each, along with common diseases, diagnostic procedures, and treatments that are common to each system. Students need to pay close attention in class, keep up with their assignments, and review the material on a regular basis in order to make a good grade this semester because the information is very detailed and involves many new terms. Homework is assigned very infrequently so that students can devote time to preparing for tests which are given approximately every two weeks. |
Clinical |
| Our clinical students have been going out on clinical rotations for several months now. Each of them completed a 3 week rotation at the nursing home first, then a 3 week rotation at the hospital. Now they are assigned to a variety of healthcare settings throughout the Martinez-Evans area. By the end of the year, each student will complete 8 different rotations. Grades this semester are given for employability skills, site evaluations, completion of required paperwork for clinical, and occasional quizzes and tests in class. Students must call-in if they are going to miss clinical. Failure to do so will result in a deduction of points from their employability grade. |
