4th - 5th Grade Early Intervention Program (EIP)
What is the Early Intervention Program?

The Early Intervention Program (EIP)is a program that provides support for students who need extra assistance in reading and math in order to perform at grade level. It provides more individualized instruction for students. This program services kindergarten through fifth grade students.

This year I am using an augmented format to assist students. This means that I go into the individual classrooms and work with all of the students at one time or another. I provide enrichment activities, as well as, remedial activities.

I also provide the students with an alternative for learning many skills. Many times I teach the same skill the classroom teacher has introduced, but in a different way. This is an effort to meet the different learning styles of all of our students.

I also work with students one-on-one to work with reading challenges. Oral reading fluency practices and assesments help to correct any challenges that may present themselves as the students tackle content subjects such as science and social studies.

Guided Reading
I visit Mrs. Lucky's and Mrs. Jenkins' reading classes to help students that are having difficulty with reading skills. I use the regular reading text along with an intervention reader that relates to the story in their textbook to help students gain reading skills that they can use in their other content courses. I also use trade books and selections from the computer to enhance student learning and to tap into the interest of students. Many times I will work with selected groups of students or assist classroom teachers with reading centers.

Class reading assignments are selected to teach necessary skills that students need to strengthen their reading abilities. Word decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, cause and effect, and inference are some of the important skills that are taught during this time. Assessments for the reading class are given as we complete reading selections.

Board games and computer games are used to reinforce the reading skills that are taught during class. These games help students to internalize the skills without realizing that they are still studying.

Homework assignments consist of:
1. Daily reading of Accelerated Reading Books for 20-30 miniutes a day. The book level is determined by the classroom teacher.
2. Reading of text from the reading book and/or intervention readers sent home. These reading assignments will be given as we begin to read the selections in class.
3. Skills practice will be sent home in the form of practice sheets and special assignments. Students will be given information for these assignments as needed.

Please help by impressng upon your child the importance of completing their homework each evening. It is this practice that will help your child become a stronger reader.

There are web sites that you can visit at home or at the local library in order to help your child build reading skills.

You will find web sites that will enhance your child's reading abilities at the link to the left.
Mathematics
I visit Mrs. Herrity and Mrs. Thomas during one of their math periods. Basic skills are the focus of my visits. I assist students that are having trouble with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on a daily basis. Each new skill that is taught by the classroom teacher is reinforced using manipulatives or other strategies. Reinforcement is provided in the form of games, guided practice, individual practice and home practice (homework).

Accelerated Math is an important part of our program. It allows us to work individually with your child on math skills they are weak in. Each practice, excercise, and test printed out from the program is unique to your child's mathematical needs.

Practice for some basic mathematical skills are listed at the link to the left.
