Introduction to Healthcare Science

Introduction to Healthcare Science Technology Education is a foundations course for all students, whether they want to work in healthcare after graduation from high school or from post-secondary education, or whether they want to find out more about these careers to see if they are interested in them. Students taking this course will learn skills for life and for work that all people should have, whatever their career choice is in life. It truly is a course for all students. Other valuable skills and knowledge my students will learn include:

*I will certify my students in CPR and First Aid, using the American Heart Association guidelines.

*Initial exposure to Healthcare Science skills and attitudes applicable to the healthcare industry

*Employability skills applicable to any career or job, such as being on time, being present, following rules and procedures, safety skills, appropriate dress, and so forth

*Concepts of health, wellness, preventative care

*Concepts of ethical and legal responsibilities of today's healthcare provider

*Fundamental healthcare knowledge including medical terminology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology
*Students will learn about professional guidelines designated by such agencies as OSHA and the CDC. This will be done through project-based learning, technical skills practice, and so on.

*This course, along with leadership skills gained from participation in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), will provide students with a competitive edge for entry into the healthcare global marketplace and/or a post-secondary institution to continue their education and training.

*This course is a prerequisite for the second year course and other healthcare science courses. In the second year course, students will participate in clinical visits in a hospital setting, as well as doctors' offices, dentists' offices, and other healthcare facilities.

*Important news beginning with the 2008-2009 Freshman Class and all students entering high school eligible under the new Georgia Graduation Rule: This course and the second year course will satisfy the 4th required Science!

*I am excited to be teaching this course at Harlem High School, and am eager to work with your child and share my love of Healthcare Science and the healthcare industry.
