Thank You to Our Families for Inspiring Their Students and Supporting Public Education

The Columbia County School District is laser-focused on maximizing achievement and success for each student. And we understand that a key to achieving that goal is to maximize family and community involvement. It is important for parents, caregivers, and family members to be actively involved in their children’s lives and learning… both at home and at school. Why? Because research shows that family engagement supports student success. Children with involved parents and family members are more likely to earn higher grades and pass their classes, attend school regularly, have better social skills, and go on to be successful in college and careers. We thank all of our families for the support they provide our students and our schools. We also encourage you to look for new ways to be involved and to join your school as we work together to inspire our students!

10 Ways to Be Involved In Your Child’s Education

  • Encourage reading—read to and with your child. Let them see you reading for enjoyment. Get your child a library card and let them check out books.
  • Communicate with your child’s teacher regularly.
  • Participate in Parent-Teacher Conferences.
  • Make sure your contact information is up to date in the parent portal.
  • Review the ACE (Academic Curriculum for Excellence) for your child’s grade level to be aware of what your child is learning.
  • Stay engaged—review assignments, attend school events, and volunteer when possible.
  • Be aware of your child’s screen time and monitor their online activity.
  • Follow a morning and bedtime routine. From the breakfast they eat to their bedtime the night before, nutrition and sleep have a big impact on a child’s attitude and performance at school.
  • Find ways to share your time and talents with your school and the school district through the CCSD Foundation, the Discovery Center of the CSRA, and other volunteer opportunities.
  • Talk to your child about their day, going beyond, “How was your day?” Ask them about what they are learning, what they had for lunch, what made them smile, and what challenged them. You also could ask them to rate their day on a scale from 1 to 10 and to tell you what they are looking forward to tomorrow.
