District Superintendent
In April 2021, Dr. Flynt was named the Superintendent of the Columbia County School District. He has worked in district leadership since 2008 as a Chief Academic Officer, Area Superintendent and Associate Superintendent as well as serving as the principal of Peachtree Ridge High School. Initially certified as a science teacher, Flynt spent nine years in the classroom teaching in both Gwinnett and DeKalb County schools. His prior experience includes service as a Biology, Chemistry and Physics teacher, high school science department chair, and assistant principal. During most of his teaching career he also coached soccer and swimming at the varsity level.
Dr. Flynt has been instrumental in leading numerous improvement efforts in education that have supported local, state and national initiatives. During his tenure he has opened thirty-five new schools and lead many innovative projects. He successfully negotiated with the Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Governor’s Office of Student Achievement to implement the state’s first flexibility contract with school districts. Dr. Flynt has also served on numerous educational boards and committees including the IMS Global Learning Consortium Board of Directors, Georgia District and School Flexibility Research Alliance and the Student Leadership Team Board.
Dr. Flynt was selected to participate in the National Aspiring Superintendents Academy through the School Superintendents Association. He studied at Young Harris College (AA Education), Lees-McRae College (BA Biology), Piedmont College (MA Science Education), and the University of Georgia, where he completed his doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. He is very active in his community, serving on many volunteer and advisory boards and committees, including the Executive Board of the Georgia Carolina Council, Boy Scouts of America. He is an Eagle Scout and received the Silver Beaver Volunteer Award for his work in the North East Georgia Council, recipient of the State of Georgia Volunteer of the Year Award and the Piedmont Excellence in Education Award. He is also a graduate of the Executive Forum Leadership Columbia County Class of 2022.
Dr. Flynt is most proud of his wonderful family, including his wife Kristin and their three daughters: Jessica, who works in hospital administration in Memphis; Emily, who is a senior at Young Harris College; and Sarah, who attends Lakeside High School in Columbia County. All three children are avid lacrosse players and enjoy spending time together as a family.
