The Columbia County School District Department of Special Education Services wants to welcome students of new and returning families to the 2025-2026 school year.
Special education services are available to eligible students ages three through 21 years. All referrals are considered confidential, and services are provided at no cost. The parent, legal guardian, or surrogate parent retains the right to refuse services and are provided with other procedural safeguards under federal and state laws.
Public school services include screenings and/or full evaluations in areas of suspected disabilities including: learning disabilities, speech and language development, physical impairment, vision, hearing, intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbances, autism, health impairments, traumatic brain injuries, and overall development.
A free, appropriate, public education with a full continuum of services is available. For more information concerning eligibility criteria and referral procedures, contact the principal or counselor of your zoned school. Each school has a Special Education Compliance Specialist assigned to assist at the school level. If you have questions regarding Special Education Services that cannot be answered by the school, please reach out to the Special Education Services district office at 706-541-2700 for assistance.
If your concerns are regarding a preschool-age child (3-5 years), please call Elisa Holley at 706-541-2700 Ext. 5360.
Referrals for private school or home-schooled students, who are not enrolled in the Columbia County School District, but who reside in the county or attend a private school located in Columbia County, are processed through the Department of Assessment in cooperation with the Special Services Office at 706-541-2700.
The Department of Special Education Services is looking forward to the new school year in support of students and their families!
